360 Zu bicycles for Peshawar BRT landed in the City to facilitate commuters.
October 9, 2019, Peshawar – “Bicycle-sharing feature of the Peshawar BRT project uniquely identifies it from other BRT projects in the country. By adding non-motorized traffic along the entire corridor and providing first and last-mile connectivity, Peshawar BRT will be promoting pollution-free environment as well as good health and convenience of commuters”, said TransPeshawar spokesperson, while talking to media at TransPeshawar office today.
360 bicycles have arrived in Peshawar for the Zu Bicycle sharing system. These bicycles have adjustable seat posts which can be easily adjusted with a “quick-release” lever for different heights of riders. To ensure the safety of riders under low light conditions, bicycles have automatic LED lights and reflectors. Once customers are registered in the system and have deposited requisite security, they can use the Zu Smart card or Zu mobile app to rent bicycles, which can be released from docks. The bicycle kiosks installed at each bicycle station will have a facility for customers to view the status of their card and access their credentials.
“We understand that the culture of borrowing bicycles and safely returning after use will be new to the public but a distinctive reward system has been built in the web / mobile/ system apps to encourage good behaviors. For example, customers who take bicycles from relatively full stations or return bicycles to relatively empty stations will be rewarded. Also, all efforts were made to manufacture these bicycles by using unique parts to discourage theft, in addition to physical security and CCTV monitoring Two-trucks will also be deployed throughout the system to redistribute cycles between stations where demand is high,” the statement added.
To rent-out and return the Zu bicycle, commuters will use the same Zu Smart card or Zu Mobile app, which they will use for buses. They will acquire bicycle for rent from 30 minutes to a few hours. The usage /rental fare will be charged for the rental time.
With a feature of the one-size-fits-all design, these bicycles have a step-through frame, which helps in mounting and dismounting a bicycle easily. A step-through frame bicycle is more appropriate as per the cultural needs of women in Peshawar, for easy riding. In addition, bicycles are chainless with solid without air tires which make these puncture free. Both tires are safely covered to avoid clothes being stuck in tires, prevent water splashing and enhance the safety of riders.
A total of 32 bicycle stations are planned in University Town and Hayatabad. There will be several bicycle docks in Peshawar University as well as in Hayatabad with kiosks to facilitate users to reach the final destination after getting off the Zu bus and vice versa.
